3.19.2001
Well, it's too late now for a really detailed posting, but a couple of quick hits are long overdue. First of all, you will notice on the left a link which reads "Guestbook." This is a link to a new bulletin board to which readers of this diary may post whatever they wish. Perhaps you may take issues with a film I mention, perhaps you think one of my comments about this or that misses the mark. Maybe you want to start a conversation about something. In any case, you can do so by clicking here or on the link which will remain in the left-hand frame on your screen.
So . . . Thursday, we got some nice flowers from my folks. I have tried calling a few times and got answering machine messages. I will try again tomorrow. Both G and I feel like we have been on the spin cycle in a washing machine. My friend Brian arrived Thursday evening, and I took Friday off from my "job." Thus Brian and I stayed up late drinking ale and catching up. Brian is a unique individual to say the least, with an outlook on the nature of the world that can be hair-raising at times. But he is one guy who is always welcome in our home and we always have some good laughs.
We went out with Dr. Manion for beers on Friday evening, another old friend who moved out here a while ago. A swell guy whom we don't see nearly enough of. Had a fun time, and Andy stayed in town after drinks rather than trek to the 'burbs (a wise choice). Saturday was of course St. Pat's. The parade this year was not down the center of the Loop as usual due to construction, so it was along Grant Park. I like it when it's down Dearborn much more, and G concurred. We went to Chief O'Neill's, a very nice pub which nonetheless had a very, very poorly-managed scene going down. We managed to get a table against all odds and drank many pints of Guinness. It has become apparaent to me over the last few months that I take less and less pleasure in drinking than I used to. I don;t even get drunk, usually. Just tired and kind of cranky. Troubling in a way, but quite OK in another. More on this later.
Most of today, laziness. Watched the movie Brazil with director's commentary from my DVD collection, which was quite a treat. Took Brian to the airport in the evening and I have spent the rest of the night job searching. Now I have to go to bed, because for some ungodly reason my boss requested me to teach a class which I really despise this week. Needless to say I am not looking forward to it.
However, I did get a feeling over the last few days of really snapping out of the funk/depression I have been in for the last couple of months, which was not helped in the least by career and personal developments. More on this issue, perhaps, after tomorrow's job-seach festival.
