Michael's Diary -- 2001-2003 Archive

4.03.2001
It's been a long couple of weeks since my last post to this diary. I have been mostly dealing with the odd situation of reporting to a job which I no longer really have, up until Friday, when my unemployment became official. I haven't had a lot to say, barring grumbling.

T.S. Eliot was full of crap when he said April is the cruellest month. For my money months don't come much crueller than this March was. My job evaporated before my eyes, Genevieve's grandfather died, necessitating a grim trip east at a time when it seemed I would be left jobless without compensation. Fortunately a severance package was negotiated, allowing me to have two months' pay while I look for work. The remainder of the month was made up of hanging around my ex-job until the end of the month, while G toiled at her job which has become increasingly unsatisfying, and hammered her way through her first round of grad school final.

The depressing nature of the month stoked the flame on which my much-ballyhooed New Year's commitments crackeld merrily away. Mostly, my energy was directed at maintaining a positive attitude toward a quite uncertain future. Now, I am fortunate to have some time to regroup as I look for work. One way of doing this is getting back in the swing of posting entries here.

As I write this the Mets battle the Braves in their season opener, the best evidence I have available for the fact that life begins again in spring. Yesterday was spent at Wrigley Field for an opening day game that was chilly but still the nicest, weather-wise, in memory. The Cubs, alas, did not cooperate by winning, due to some truly boneheaded managerial choices by Don Baylor. Still, it was nice. Tomorrow my friend Suzanne has offer me free tickets to the game, which I am gleefully accepting.

Today was spent eating breakfast, tidying house, and digging up job opportunities on the web. I have a heap of these to apply for tomorrow before the game. I'm going to search and compile one day, apply the next, where this seems fitting. There's only so much digging around one can do at the PC before the eyes start to bug out.

Part of my plan is to get up nice and early. Sleeping in late is habit-forming. You sleep in too late, and you can't get to sleep at a decent hour, so you sleep in too late the next day, and so on. I need to keep momentum over the next eight weeks until I get a job. Basically, I have to treat my day as a job, and get into my little office and do what needs to be done.

Today, I did OK on that score but had a really hard time getting up. Finally got to "work" around 10:30 or so. Ran an errand and walked the dog, and came back to catch the baseball game. Alals I have to tune in on the 'net because the wizards at TBS decided showing their nightly reruns of Roseanne were more important.

Tomorrow, applications, and then some more baseball.
