Michael's Diary -- 2001-2003 Archive

2.02.2002
Well, a dodgy lot of entries in the diary this week. But it has been a busy one. Logged my first customer for work yesterday. She was delighted with the service, which is, as far as I am concerned, the par I'm shooting for every time.

We had some major snow the night before last, but nothing too bad -- 8 inches here, 12 inches there. Still, it made maneuvering and parking kind of tricky. The Bug handles pretty well in the snow, although its low ground clearance gives me pause when I'm coming near a snowbank.

After the customer I made some promotional calls and headed home. Had an out-of-town visitor and bought him a few beers.

Today, spent most of my time waiting for the UPS man to deliver a signature-required package. The slip he left yesterday said delivery would be attempted today between 10 and 2. Guess what time he showed up? Like, 1:55. Most of my day shot. Turned out to be my DSL modem which I hooked up with surprising little hassle. I now surf the web at lightning speeds. After I hooked it up I hit the road to make up for lost time in the Geekmobile. Spent some time whizzing around in Lincoln Park. Spoke with the sommelier from Charlie Trotter's, who was in Trotter's to Go. She liked the Geek Squad idea. So did a nice lady I met outside. She flipped over the whole concept. T-shirt dispensed.

Kind of lame Shepherd's Pie for dinner tonight. Tasted OK; the recipe was not a very good one. Watched Kubrick's Paths of Glory tonight; G went to sleep earlier. A really good flick with hints of the visual motifs Kubrock would employ in later films.

Afterwards I read book two of the new Dark Knight miniseries by Frank Miller. Good stuff -- not as good as the original Dark Knight book, but better than most in the genre.

I was going to post more but it's late and while I am in a very good humor I'm not feeling very chatty.

Tired and achy today. Two days running I lifted weights and took a walk in the early AM. Today my shoulders and sides ache from the wieghts. Maybe I pressed too hard -- probably. I am taking the day off from weights and will use lighter ones tomorrow.

Zip, zip, zip. That's me in the Geekmobile, zipping around town. I have almost all my supplies in order -- a couple of little items are needed today -- so setting up visits to potential customers (and places potential customers congregate) is big on my list today.

I need to change into my uniform now. More later.

You should still check out the webcam, though.

I thought I'd also say yes, I know I haven't done anything with the web page at all lately. Guilty as charged. Stuff is coming, I promise.

Today was a VERY busy day. Got up early and got some food for G, then headed out on some errands.

Last night we had a jolly evening out with some friends at the pub 'round the corner. Much oohing and aahing over the VW. Stayed out way too late. We both felt a little fuzzy this morning. I headed out to get some stuff for the new gig, all over the North Side in the Geekmoible. . . many turned heads. It's nice to drive a car that makes people smile.

Got some office-supply kind of stuff, a new case for the Palm, some reference materials, supplies for our printer, and a computer game -- a treat, something I've been holding off buying. . . Return to Castle Wolfenstein, a modern updating of the original classic. Built on the Quake 3 engine, I think.

Anyway, I opened it up tonight and. . . no disc. Someone had slit it open and pocketed the CD. Arrrrgh. Disappointment. Just as well. . . I have spent most of tonight organizing all my work stuff into heavily portable configurations that I can pack and unpack easily in the car. I'll hit the place tomorrow.

Whew. Did some laundry inter alia. G and I ordered NY Pizza again. So good. We watched Project Greenlight together, and man, how little it makes one want to be involved in the making of a film sometimes. I'm sure we only see 10% of whatever the producers of the show deem even worthy of filming, let alone what really happens. . . but some things are handled so obviously wrong, it almost makes you angry.

Forgot to mention that my brother called yesterday and we had a great conversation. Anyone who hasn't heard from me who may be reading this, sorry if I haven't been in touch. I've just had my hands full the last few days.

Anyway, still stuff to do, so I will keep this short.
