Michael's Diary -- 2001-2003 Archive

11.03.2002
Well, so far no comments on the diary's return. I kind of like doing this stealth diary.

This week, I saw many films by Akira Kurosawa that were screening at the Music Box Theatre, a repertory house here in town. I love the films they have at the theatre but the projectionist's work is often sub-par. I don't know if it is the equipment to blame, or the usual underpaid projectionist. The 70 mm films they show have particular issues: a bright glow in the center of the frame, the aperture set incorrectly. Very aggravating when you've coughed up $10. I think they have an old 70 projector, maybe that's why. But standard sizes are no more immune. Last night's showing of The Hidden Fortress was cockeyed, actually running at about a 5-10 degree angle. The subtitles were slanted and you could see the image bleeding into a littletriangle of the red fabric at the bottom of the screen.

But anyway, the films were great: Throne of Blood, Rashomon, Yojimbo and Hidden Fortress. All such wonderful pictures. This week it's Sanjuro, High and Low, Seven Samurai, and Red Beard (which I have never seen before).

Went to the nutritionist to get weighed in and discuss how I'm doing. I lost 23 pounds in 5 weeks following the basic regimen described in my last posting. I gave myself a break on walking today and feel a little guilty about it but not too much, as I will make it up later in the week. 127 more pounds to go and I will let nothing stop me -- that said, I discussed with the nutritionist the idea of "cheating" on my birthday and having some chicken wings, pizza and some extra beers. She approved but said to try to limit, don't go berserk. I don't think I will have a choice but to be mellow; I have got some habits forming here...

My boss comes to town on Tuesday to chat about the recent acquisition of our company by Best Buy. Should be interesting.
