Michael's Diary -- 2001-2003 Archive

5.15.2003
I just wrote up a big long story about yesterday and a weird experience I had, hit the wrong key in w.bloggar and poof!. But now it's too late to retype it and damn, are you missing out. Here is the Readers' Digest version. If i have time I'll fill in the blanks later:

Backtracking: Yesterday, a busy day with customers. Came home just before 5 and heard a ring at the door. It was a guy trying to scam me out of money by claiming to be my next-door neighbor whose wife was having a baby in Elk Grove -- he said he had locked himself out and needed cab fare. Nearly fell for it until my willingness to drive him myself caused him to diappear without explanation. He hit up the neighbor across the street. What a cynical piece of shit. More details, perhaps, soon. Took a walk, had some dinner, worked on some 3D animation, went to bed at a reasonable time.

This morning, dropped off the laundry, had a call way south of the city which took all day and was very successful. Made my way north again, picked up the laundry, dropped off the dry cleaning, deposited my checks for work, took out some money, made dinner for G and me, did some more 3D work, then fucked up my diary entry for today. Now I am all jangeld but oddly wide awake. I will watch some TV to put my brain in veg-state for a bit and hit the hay soon.

A reasonably good day today. Definitely feeling a bit on the upswing spending a lot of time with Genevieve, seeing my family and closest friends from home over the weekend all helped -- still feeling a little woozy from the weekend's adventures though. Only had a couple of customers, nothing too challenging, had a nice walk listening to the new Afrocelts CD which I picked up at Tower today. Was going to write tonight but lost the urge, feeling a little too out of it. Some good ideas are percolating about my screenplay, and I don't want to scare them away. I think I will be able to tackle it tomorrow. Watched Three Kings tonight for the second time. Good movie. A little flashy from time to time; the photographic effects are generally interesting but at times a little heavy-handed. Other than that, it's an interesting and original story, with something useful to say, with an undercurrent of black, sly humor which I really appreciate.

Got an early call tomorrow, miles away, and so it's bed time.

Home again. Hooray. Not a busy calendar in the early morn for me either, which I welcome. Some relaxation and then an early bedtime.

Pocket PC entry from earlier:

[7:58 PM] Somewhere over Michigan aboard United Flight 209. Now that the weekend is over, I can reveal that we went to Albany to partake of a surprise party for my good pal AJ. (The only unfortunate thing was that my friend Brian in DC ALSO had a surprise party which we could not attend as we had already committed to AJ's.)

He was quite thoroughly surprised. We had a lot of laughs and a LOT of beer (and whiskey). In fact, the diet plan was pretty much cast entirely aside for the trip. Needed some recovery food today as I was a little shaky. Fortunately my sister Siobhan had planned a nice family get-together for Mother's Day. Got to hang out with the fam, and have some hangover-healing goodies including my contribution of kick-ass chilaquiles. (Dice a spicy smoked sausage or two -- chorizo or andouille are best -- brown it in a nonstick pan, let the pan cool, add a teaspoon of olive oil, some minced garlic, and three scrambled eggs. Stir gently. When the eggs are almost set, crumble a good-sized handful of high-quality tortilla chips in, and add several tablespoons of good quality salsa. Stir again. When the eggs are done, add about an ounce or two of grated sharp cheddar cheese. Serve topped with salsa -- and hot sauce, if you like.)

This week it's back on the wagon big time. Next weekend finds us in Philadelphia visiting Genevieve's family -- there's a memorial service for her grandfather, and her sister Elizabeth graduates from college. I'm going to be super-diet-religious all week so I can have a cheesesteak as my big cheat!

Today was kind of bleary, though nice, until we got to the airport. Boarded a really crowded plane, then after an hour had to get back off -- bad weather in Chicago meant we were being held until 9 pm, from our scheduled 5:30 departure. Mild chaos ensued as various passengers whose connections were now totally hosed lined up to reschedule flights. Finally they blew the all-clear and managed to get us into the air around 8 -- where we remain as I tap this entry into my Pocket PC, strapped onto a hundred tons of jet-propelled metal, hurtling westward at an alarming rate. Flying is kind of sobering if you think of it that way.
